This was the store my Grandfather originally opened in 1907. The original store is the part with the gable facing forward. In the 1940's they moved the main store to the stone building on the other side of the driveway. After the store moved, this building was used as a storage building for animal feed. The white building at the far end of the building was a garage and was used to store hay when I was growing up. The store is not in Donathon but at what was called Summit with Griffith Creek and Three Mile Creek being adjacent to the property.
In Eastern Kentucky, our unique history and culture is disappearing at an alarming rate. This photographic archive is an attempt to preserve a record of the old houses, barns, schools, churches, stores, and other landmarks before they are lost to us forever.
The Old Log Cabin In The Lane
Oh the chimney's fallen down and the roof's all caved in
Lettin' in the sunshine and the rain
And the only friend I've got now is that good old dag of mine
And the little old log cabin in the lane
Oh the trees have all growed up that lead around the hill
The fences have all gone to decay
And the creeks have all dried up where we used to go to mill
And things have changed their course another way
