Brick Store, Catlettsburg, Boyd County

  1. This was originally the Catlettsburg Fire Company when it was constructed in the late 1870's. A large fire swept through a large portion of the downtown area which was mostly built of wood. At the time the fire dept. consisted of one paid fireman and volunteers with only a horse drawn fire truck. By the time the volunteers were summoned to the fire scene it was already out of control. As a result the city government decided to organize a fire company with a paid chief and 3 paid men. It was decidedc that a fire station was needed so they built this then for that purpose. A steam powered fire engine was purchased and housed in the downstairs with the horse drawn fire truck as well as a back up unit.
